La La Land

“La La Land”, By Demi Lovato, is a popular song that presents an argument that says people should not have to change themselves to satisfy the wants or needs of others. Demi Lovato is a growing pop star just starting to hit the Hollywood scene. She got her start as a Disney Channel actress and she says in her song “Well, some may say I need to be afraid of losing everything, cause of where I had my start and where I made my name”. Most people present the argument that kids that start their career off at Disney channel are thrown to the curb as soon as their hit show goes out of style. She also sings “Well, everything’s the same in the La-La Land machine.” The nickname “La-La Land” is a widely known name for Los Angeles. This is an example of satire, because Demi is basically say that it’s all crazy, so it doesn’t matter what she does, because it’s all the same.
This song is also presenting a universal argument that you don’t have to be perfect, and you should stay you, especially when diving into the depths of Hollywood. “I’m not a supermodel, I still eat McDonalds, baby, that’s just me.” Demi is telling the listeners that even though she’s a popular singer, and an actress, she’s just like everyone else, which presents an ethos form. She’s connecting to the listeners, trying to tell them that she doesn’t have to change who she is to impress the press or the people judging her, that she likes herself exactly the way she is. All people are faced with the pressure of changing who they are to fit in better. Whether its dressing better, losing weight, who you’re dating, or even where you are from. In the song Demi sings “Who said I can’t wear my converse with my dress, well baby, that’s just me.” She is constantly being judged by the paparazzi, the critics, and all of America that is watching her on television, or listening to her on the radio. She also sings “Who says I can’t be single, And I have to go out and mingle? Baby…that’s not me.” Demi is trying to connect to the listeners and get her point across that, she’s not going to change for anyone, even for these really “important” people, so neither should we. She’s telling us to just stay ourselves, and not to change for anyone.
The music video is pretty simple, and easy to understand the rhetoric. It starts out as a talk show in a studio (having the Hollywood sign in clear view), with Demi as the special guest and a host, who introduces Demi as a singer an actress and a “fashion icon”. The host then asks her what it is like to be a star, and it changes to the music video. The beginning portion is an example of satire, and symbolism, because they’re making fun of the way shows gush over big stars.
The video has three different settings: one where Demi is walking around in a crowded street, another where she’s at a red carpet premiere for her new Disney channel show, and lastly a photo shoot, where she is dressed up in a big pink wig. In the scenes where she is walking around in the street, she has normal clothes on but is being surrounded by people doing weird things. This is supposed to represent the “La-La” part, or craziness, of the la-la land. As she is walking she is stopped by a boy, who hugs her and then a photographer stops and takes pictures of them, which ends up on the cover of a magazine. This is to show that people are always watching, and she can’t escape people judgments. It then switches to the red carpet premiere, where she is wearing a little black dress, and converse shoes, which is playing along with the line in the song. She’s standing alongside her cast of her Disney show, which could be interpreted that she’s doing just fine, even though everyone is questioning her status and her start in the Hollywood scene, then it changes to her photo shoot, where she’s put in this tiny little pink dress and this big pink wig, to symbolize how they’re trying to change her, and make her better, even though she looks like a fool. In the end its just flashing between all three and then the song finishes and it goes back to the studio and the host says “well, alright, you go girl.”

In their song, “Skin,” Rascal Flatts uses a touching story to show that hope can be found when facing painful and sorrowful times. The story revolves around a girl named Sarabeth. In the first verse of the song, the audience finds her in a doctor’s office and soon discovers she has cancer, but will be receiving treatment as soon as possible. In the second verse, Sarabeth wakes up and is devastated when she finds she is losing her hair, but all hope is not lost. At the end of the song, she goes to the prom with her “first true love” who shaved his head just so everyone wouldn’t just stare at Sarabeth, but at him as well. This song is about finding hope and love in the darkest of places.
Rascal Flatts uses pathos all throughout this song. The first verse is full of these appeals to the heart. The very first line makes the reader recall feelings of fear and anxiousness in order to relate to the character. When they talk about how Sarabeth’s bruise “just won’t go away,” the reader can almost feel the fear that comes when something is wrong in a person’s own body and he or she is finding it difficult to get an answer to such an important question. When the nurse comes out, she is smiling and pleasant which gives the reader hope. Ironically, Sarabeth is about to hear the worst news of her life. In the line, “the doctor just told her the news,” they don’t use good or bad, but keep it neutral. The reader’s emotions are left to struggle with hope and apprehension at the same time. They try to give the reader hope with phrases like “gonna take care of you”, the therapy is “the strongest there is” and “we caught it in time.” The song transition to the chorus now. It is filled bright and cheerful words and images such as dream, “without any cares”, dancing, first love and soft wind.
Now, the second verse begins. This verse is filled with sadness and loneliness. The phrase, “it would be a mistake for someone to take a girl with no hair to the prom”, speaks especially to female audience members. A female knows the importance of hair in a girl’s life. A bad hair day is disappointing, but having no hair would make many girls feel ugly and depressed. “The cruelest of any surprise” is an interesting phrase. Most times when someone thinks about a surprise the first things they think of are parties or presents. This phrase gives mixed feelings, but that is so the reader can sympathize with Sarabeth. As the reader feels these mixed emotions, they read “the proof that she couldn’t deny.” This phrase evokes a feeling of hopelessness and despair. Her biggest fear have been confirmed and she can hold the proof in her hands.
In the third verse, Sarabeth’s prom date arrives. When everyone starts to cry, the reader becomes confused and wonder what has happened. The very last line, “Softly, she touches just skin,” is the most emotional line in the song. Rascal Flatts uses the word skin instead of describing his bald head. This word choice gives a softer more meaningful tone to the line which lets the audience feel the sweetness of the moment. The final chorus is only slightly altered, but it give the reader feelings of absolute happiness and hope. The most emotion provoking change is the change from first love to first true love. With the addition of the word true, the audience can imagine all of Sarabeth’s dreams coming true.
Rascal Flatts uses ethos and logos as well. Being well-known country singers, the members of Rascal Flatts are seen as professionals in music. The audience trusts them to be accurate in their telling of this story, especially one as serious as a cancer story. When they use logos, they are using cultural assumptions. Not everyone in every country understands cancer and the side effects of its treatment, but all of this is fairly common knowledge in the Unites States. Rascal Flatts is able to be rather non-descript about the cancer in the song because of this. When they talk about something not being normal with the red blood cells and white blood cells, they are talking specifically about leukemia which is cancer of the blood cells. At this point in the song, most people may not know Sarabeth is battling cancer, but they do know something is very wrong. Not until the second verse when Sarabeth loses her hair do many people realize she has cancer. We can now assume that the treatment the doctor talked about was chemotherapy.
In the music video for “Skin,” Rascal Flatts uses several interesting techniques that draw the viewer in and help the viewer understand the story better. When the video has scenes that are about Sarabeth and her family, these scenes are all a series of still-shots, almost like photographs. This technique makes the viewer feel as though they are looking at pictures in an album making the video more personal. Another technique used in these scenes is the use of color. All the still-shots are in black and white, but in each and every one, Sarabeth is in color. This technique makes the viewers focus on Sarabeth and the emotions running through her at the time. It also shows a certain level of isolation in her suffering, a feeling of loneliness. At the very end, a small clip is shown as Sarabeth and her date are leaving. This clip is in full color and allows the reader to see exactly how happy Sarabeth is through her smile and her body language. At this time, the audience can see Sarabeth’s loneliness and isolation being dispelled and they can feel the joy, happiness and hope she has found.

If I Were A Boy

"If I were A Boy"

if i were a boy-even just for a day-i'd roll out of bed in the morning and throw on what i wanted and go-drink beer with the guys and chase after girls-i'd kick it with who i wanted and i'd never get confronted for it- cause they'd stick up for me--(Chorus)---if i were a boy, i think i could understand-how it feels to love a girl- i swear i'd be a better man-i'd listen to her, cause i know how it hurts-when you lose the one you wanted cause he's taking you for granted and everything you had got destroyed---if i were a boy, i would turn off my phone- tell everyone it's broken so they'd think that i was sleeping alone-i'd put myself first and make the rules as i go-cause i know that she'd be faithful-waiting for me to come home---CHORUS---it's a little too late for you to come back-say it's just a mistake think i'd forgive you like that-if you thought i would wait fro you- you thought wrong--you know when you act like that- i don't think you realize how it maked me look or feel--act like what- why are you so jealous, it's not like i'm sleeping with the guy--what--what-i said yo-why are you so jealous, it ain't like i'm sleeping with the girl--but you're just a boy, so you dont' understand-how it feels to love a girl-some day you wish you were a better man-you don't listen to her-you don't care how it hurts-until you lose the one you wanted cause you've taken her for granted- and everything you had got destroyed-but you're just a boy

Beyonce shows her rhetorical strategies in “If I were A Boy,” making it a great argument to show the difference between how guys and girls act in a relationship. In the beginning of the song, she starts off by stating all the things she would be able to do if she were the guy in the relationship. She would be able to just wake up in the morning and be able to wear whatever she wanted without having to spend hours worrying about what she looks like. Also, she would be able to hang out with whoever she wanted to without having to get yelled at because her friends would all stick up for her. In the chorus she continues with saying “if I were a boy” only now she’s taking it from how she feels as the girl. Her feelings are that now she knows how much it hurts to be treated like this by a guy so if she were actually the boy in the relationship she would never treat a girl like that. It’s saying that a guy will continue to take the girl for granted until everything that he really wanted gets destroyed because he pushed her too far. In the next verse she continues with if she were a boy she would just turn off her phone and tell the girl it broke so that he could go out with some other girl. She wouldn’t really care what she did because no matter what at the end of the day the girl is at home waiting for her. Towards the end of the song, there is some dialogue between the guy and the girl that makes the argument pretty strong. It even just shows the difference in the tone and word choice between a guy and girl when they’re saying the exact same thing. While she simply just says “why are you so jealous it’s not like I’m sleeping with the guy,” he uses different words like “yo” and “ain’t” which just make it sound more rude: “I said, yo why are you so jealous, it ain’t like I’m sleeping with the girl.” The song wraps up with her basically just giving up saying that he’s just a boy and he’s never going to understand what it’s like to be hurt like that.
Watching the music video for this song actually made the song more effective. When viewing it you can actually show the emotion between the two. Throughout most of the video she is the boy and it’s interesting to see how the boy reacts when the roles are reversed. This song is perfect for a rhetorical analysis because she’s got a good strategy for the argument by being the boy in the situation.

I can ride my bike wikth no handle bars...

Mary Martin
“ I can ride my bike with no handle bars”

The song is a powerful piece of self expression. It’s a very political song that shows how one person can have so much power, and sometimes that leads to destruction. The song is about how someone can start with doing something simple from riding a bike with no handle bars to leading the nation in a holocaust. That the simple things in life matter and it all leads up to something that is greater then what we think. Every little thing that we do has repercussion’s both positive and negative .I can ride my bike with no handle bars by the flobots has many different reasons on why it is such a powerful song; with great imagery, pathos, logos, and a flow that goes from peaceful to more and more serious things, with great uses of repetition and showing how the world is.
The video starts out with two friends riding their bikes with no handle bars and then they come to a path. This path represents to different ways of life. One friend takes the road that makes him happy, the one that doesn’t involve greed or corporations; he chooses the path of the simple life. His friend on the other hand takes the path of the corporation. He gets caught up in the corporate world run by men that don’t have morals. They only care for themselves. This leads to him ruling the country into a holocaust. With every war there are rebels and guess who is the leader for the rebels?; yes his childhood friend leads the rebels to go against the corporations and the government. The Leader of the corporation doesn’t know all that is going to happen, only that his power consumes him. In the end he realizes what he finally does when his childhood friend is shot down right in front of him.
The song starts off with a peaceful thing, hitting close to our generation. A few examples of logos and pathos at the same time would be things like: “ I know all the words to de colures and I’m proud to be an American”, and “ I can see your face on the telephone.” These would be good examples of Logos because they are the logical way of getting us, starting us off with simple things that we know. The Pathos part is these small little peaceful parts are from our generation and we can relate to them, which kind of hits home for a lot of us.
“ I can make computers survive aquatic conditions” As the song progresses it gets more and more intense. It talks about real issues like people trying to build things to make our society even more technological and efficient. With hits points within the video, where technology is used as a tool to watch us and keep us from uprising against the dictatorship that we are in.
As the song continues it gets more scarier and scarier appealing to the more passionate side of the human race. Saying that one person can kill anyone because the don’t like them, or he can release a disease to the world and only giver certain people the cure. The Tone of this song is lighthearted in the beginning then as the song progresses it gets more serious and more deep. With the repetition the song has almost the same line a few times: Like I can keep rhythm with no metronome, no metronome, no metronome; the artist keep repeating the same thing over and over to get the beat and these little points stuck in your head.
The way video is you get to see the world through one boys eyes. It starts of with the two friends riding bikes with no handle bars then goes through a series of things that get more and more serious, then at the end of the video it returns to the boys riding their bikes. It’s a really powerful video in some areas. In one area of the video it has ethos, because you can see there are a whole bunch of cameras watching everyone; not many people think that it is ethical to have our every little movement watched; and quite frankly I think it’s quite horrifying being watched. Another powerful part of the video is the end of the video where you see the friends at the same place, but one is in front of the microphone commanding officers and the other is fighting against officers. It’s like an all out holocaust and uprising. The man in front of the microphone watches tons of people die and then he watches his own child hood friend die and then he realizes the horror of what he’s been doing. I believe that the writers of the video decided to make it two child hood friends, because you always remember your childhood friends. This would be the appeal of pathos, because as everyone grows up they have memories with a curtsying child hood friend they would never want to harm, but in this video the one man going against the dictatorship had to choose his freedom or his friends. He choose freedom, which shows many people would do anything to have that freedom, even kill someone dear to them.
I believe that we deserve the freedom that we have and a little more. I believe each time someone makes a new rule, our freedom is getting taken away little by little and soon we will have none left. Just as the flobots demonstrated we can not have one powerful person or even just a group of powerful people rule over our nation. I feel like we have very little input on things and their should be more.

Lyrics to Handlebars :I can ride my bike with no handlebars
No handlebars

And I can almost put it back together I can tie a knot in a cherry stem I can tell you about Leif Ericson I know all the words to "De Colores"And "I'm Proud to be an American"
Me and my friend saw a platypus Me and my friend made a comic book
And guess how long it tookI can do anything that I want cuz, look:
I can keep rhythm with no metronome
No metronome
No metronome
I can see your face on the telephone
On the telephone
On the telephone
Look at me Look at me Just called to say that it's good to be ALIVE In such a small worldAll curled up with a book to read I can make money open up a thrift store
I can make a living off a magazine
I can design an engine sixty four Miles to a gallon of gasoline I can make new antibiotics I can make computers survive aquatic conditions
I know how to run a business And I can make you wanna buy a product
Movers shakers and producers Me and my friends understand the future
I see the strings that control the system sI can do anything with no assistance
I can lead a nation with a microphone
With a microphoneWith a microphone
I can split the atoms of a molecule
Of a molecule

Look at me Driving and I won't stop And it feels so good to beAlive and on top
My reach is global

"Human" The Killers by Mark Lundh

“Human” a song produced by the group known as the Killers, depicts the struggle between life and death.
For years there has been discussion regarding life and death. Books have been written about the death experience hypothesizing that there is life after death. Other books have been written, debunking that way of thinking. Religious groups have gathered to discuss this for years and to date no one theory has been accepted by all.
The Killers lyrics looks at this topic and talks about the struggle between life and death. First off, the song starts off, “I did my best to notice, when the call came down the line, Up to the platform of surrender, I was brought but I was kind, And sometimes I get nervous, When I see an open door, Close your eyes, Clear your heart, Cut the cord., which talks about the call from heaven. Whether or not we have a choice to go or keep on fighting. To me it means letting the inevitable happen no matter if it’s death of a loved one. Basically getting rid of that fear of the unknown and moving on with existence.
Then the song starts talking about, “Are we human? Or are we dance?” Is this real that is happening to all of us or is it just make believe. Do we as human beings have control over our lives, are destiny! Can I choose my path in life and death or are we just puppets with strings attached. Is there someone controlling our every move, choosing our path for us or is our destiny pre-determined by God. That’s an answer that we all have to figure out for ourselves. Being a Christian, I do believe we have a chose about the path we lead, that’s what is so crucial about faith. Then the song talks about the final acceptance of what is suppose to happen, Death! The song depicts the letting go of various virtues that one possesses during one’s life such as grace, virtue, good, kindness, and love. The song speaks as if it’s talking to someone and saying goodbye like the line, “Wave goodbye, Wish me well, you’ve got to let me go.” Then the person is asking for conformation about him/ her dying. Again this is something that has been written and reported by people who have experienced the near death experience where they claim to have been able to see others in their environment talking and working on them to bring them back to life. This author holds to the testament that has been made by so many that there is life after death. My religious beliefs support this.
The video appears to support this author’s interpretation of the song. The video starts off by having the group in a canyon of some sort singing this song with the sun blazing. You start by noticing the lack of vegetation, water, and any abundance of animals pretty much immediately. The canyon represents the body in its most basic form, since the body consists of dirt, water, and air. The blazing sun could be meant as the constant struggle or trails one face’s in life with regards to the physical, emotional, and spiritual being. Then the video shows us an array of animals such as a white tiger, a cougar, and a condor. The most fascinating of these animals is the condor. The video shows 2 to 3 seconds of the condor flying in the air which I think is one of the keys to this whole video. It speaks of freedom in the most basic of understanding. Letting go of one’s trails, of life, the connection to the human body and of one’s mind. It could also be meant as the human body moving on to another state of being whether it be heaven or hell according to Catholics, Christians, and Muslims or to the Buddhist religion a rebirth (reincarnation). The white tiger and cougar represents mans basic instinct for survival and the frailty of the human body.
The video shows us a collection of mirror with various images of each group member appearing and then disappearing which this author feels could represent the various views of life or how you perceive yourself and your surroundings. Then the video shows each person in the group standing with a picture of themselves covering their face, then pictures being switched with each other. It could be an analysis of their identity or could be expressed as losing one’s identity or self-image with regards to death. You as a person, losing a small piece of yourself.
The end of the video shows the group facing away from the sun (towards you) then the day turns into night, sun into the moon. Then the group is facing towards the moon, when all of a sudden the night and the moon turn to a painting. Absolute stillness! These various scenes’ calls toward the end of one’s existence. Not just the end but the acceptance of one’s final moments. They embrace what’s supposed to come, never looking away, the starting of a new day.
In summary, the author of Human explored a controversial subject and one that has no definitive answer. He has used abstract depiction to challenge the viewer and listener to develop his own interpretation of what has been put forth. For those who believe in an after-life they will see this in the music/video. For those who hold other beliefs they will view this as an abstract work of art. Perhaps it is safe to say that “beauty is in the eyes of the beholder.”

“Human” The Killers

“Human” Lyrics- The Killers
I did my best to notice
When the call came down the line
Up to the platform of surrender
I was brought but I was kind
And sometimes I get nervous
When I see an open door
Close your eyes
Clear your heart..
Cut the Cord
Are we Human?
Or are we dancer?
My sign is vital
My hands are cold
And I’m on my knees
Looking for the answer
Are we Human?
Or are we dancer?
Pay my respect to grace and virtue
Send my condolences to good
Give my regards to soul and romance,
They always did the best they could
And so long to devotion
You taught me everything I know
Wave goodbye
Wish me well..
You’ve gotta let me go
Are we Human?
Or are we dancer?
My sign is vital
My hands are cold
And I’m on my knees
Looking for the answer
Are we Human?
Or are we dancer?
Will your system be alright
When you dream of home tonight?
There is no message we’re receiving
Let me know is your heart still beating
Are we Human?
Or are we dancer?
My sign is vital
My hands are cold
And I’m on my knees
Looking for the answer
You’ve gotta let me know
Are we Human?
Or are we dancer?
My sign is vital
My hands are cold
And I’m on my knees
Looking for the answer
Are we Human?
Or are we dancer?
Are we Human?
Or are we dancer?
Are we Human?Or are we dancer?
Natalie Maines, lead singer of Dixie chicks, voiced her opinion about the War in Iraq and her feelings towards the current president in 2003. This comment caused quite an uproar in the country music industry and in the U.S. The Dixie chicks too full responsibility for their actions while countless amounts of radio stations banned their music and the public held protests to boycott the chicks music by destroying CD’s and such. Natalie Maines, and the other two members of the band, express the remorse and anger through the song “Not ready to make nice.” The passion of pain and frustration is apparent in the lyrics and visually in the music video.
The rhetoric in the lyrics is plain to recognize. The lyrics depict a feeling of anger and a hint of remorse. But the remorse only goes so far. Of course the band members are sorry for what was said and who it offended but time cannot erase the drama that that one little quote had caused. The reader can sense that a grudge is being held for the emotional distress the writers had endured. “I’m not ready to make nice, I’m not ready to back down,” shows the reader that the Dixie Chicks are not ready to put their guard down and to forgive and forget. Maines said what she felt and was punished immensely for her opinions. Like everyone who lives in the United States, people are entitled to have an opinion and to speak freely on whatever subject any way they want. The United States was founded on the constitution and its amendments and these ladies should not be hated because they had the right to freedom of speech. Others might have different opinions on the exiting president and how he ran this country but no one was ridiculed more than the Dixie chicks.
The pathos is evident in the text which is why this musical group chose to write a song like this. The writers are upset with how strongly people reacted and how it affected them. “I’ve paid a price and I’ll keep paying,” Maines, and others girls of the band, understand the actions that follow Maines words, but the pain it has caused the group is still lingering in the back of their minds still returning to haunt them. In the song it says “time heals everything, but I’m still waiting,” even thought what’s in the past is long gone, the girls still feel pain on the subject. The pathos is the strongest is this stanza: “ And how in the world can the words that I said send somebody so over the edge that they’d write me a letter sayin’ that I better shut up and sing or my life will be over,” Not only did people destroyed their music and radios wouldn’t play their music, they received hateful letters telling her to basically don’t talk or your life will be over. The logos is the strongest part of the song. The members of this band have every right to be upset on how the situation was handled and what they went through. This rhetoric in the lyrics is very strong and can persuade a reader to sympathize with this musical group.

Lyrics:
Looking back on the memory ofThe dance we shared 'neath the stars aboveFor a moment all the world was rightHow could I have known that you'd ever say goodbyeAnd now I'm glad I didn't knowThe way it all would end the way it all would goOur lives are better left to chance I could have missed the painBut I'd have had to miss the danceHolding you I held everythingFor a moment wasn't I a kingBut if I'd only known how the king would fallHey who's to say you know I might have changed it allAnd now I'm glad I didn't knowThe way it all would end the way it all would goOur lives are better left to chance I could have missed the painBut I'd have had to miss the danceYes my life is better left to chanceI could have missed the pain but I'd have had to miss the dance

This is my First Draft and it’s really a first Draft because I have been in-out of the hospital with my boyfriend because he was in a bad car accident on Thursday morning.
The Dance…

In the Garth Brooks song “The Dance” the singer is trying to mention that it’s a double meaning of both a love song of an end of a passionate relationship and by the way the lyrics is telling the story it’s about someone dying of something they believe in, or it’s a moment of glory. In other words t he video mention Martin Luther Kings, and J.F.K, they left this world unexpectedly. The Video mentions that…. for the folks seen in this video, but for some reason god for bid I have to leave this world unexpectedly I hope that they play the dance for me, means that’s I could have missed the pain, if I had to miss the dance, I wouldn’t had miss this for the world.

The meaning of this song to me is its very powerful and touching story line. I remember would Dale Earnhardt pass away unexpectedly, that they played this story and added words in the story about Earnhardt. When they added words about someone that had passed away it really makes you tear up inside. I believe that the author of this song wanted us to live in the moment that we believe in because something might go wrong unexpectedly. I feel that this song is presented in a very good way, so that the listeners can really relate and get a true meaning of this song. “For a moment all the world was right how could I have known that you'd ever say goodbye And now I'm glad I didn't know The way it all would end the way it all would go Our lives are better left to chance I could have missed the pain….” I believe that this verse means to take chances on life… and for a moment all the world was right… I feel if I know what was going to happen that I would rather say in that moment then go on with life knowing what was going to happen.
