"I Am the Walrus" is a song by The Beatles. The songs lyrical content is much different than that of other songs of its time. "I am the eggman, they are the eggmen, I am the walrus", are lyrics that to the naked eye probably don’t make any sense, as they should being that they are inspired by an LSD trip. All the lyrics to the song describe images that John Lennon saw while taking LSD. Images such as "yellow custard dripping from a dead dogs eye", and "elementary penguins kicking Edgar Allan Poe". For one to experience seeing these things may disturb most people, or even cause some form of mental damage, as of course LSD can do to people. Not for John Lennon, for him they gave the inspiration to create art. For this reason it is difficult to deconstruct the lyrics to this song to, or find an over all message. Though in a different song "The Glass Onion" on the White Album John says, "The walrus is Paul". Meaning that the walrus is actually Paul McCartney. Does this mean that while on LSD John thought that Paul was a walrus?
The video to "I Am the Walrus" is not typical music video like in today’s contemporary music culture. It is a part of the movie "The Magical Mystery Tour", which is the same as the album title the song is on. The content of the "video" consists of the Beatles going through the motions of playing their instruments, when they’re clearly not really playing anything. They also dress up like a walrus, eggmen, police officers, and other such creatures. The video like the song does not have much central structure, or really a point to it other than to dazzle the eye! I can only guess that it is the Beatles attempt at trying to simulate Johns LSD trip, to give the casual Beatles fan a window into the mind of a drugged out hippie musician.
The rhetoric of the songs lyrics are very abstract, and describe things that are at the time of an almost inappropriate nature such as, "girl you let your nickers down". Though that is nothing compared to the "songs" written today by illiterate ghetto dwellers. I don’t know what pathos is in the song being that I don’t believe that John is trying to derive pity from people with his lyrics. The target audience I believe would be that of drugged out hippies, beatnik hipsters, and art fags. The lyrics are very abstract, the music is almost eerie with piano and orchestra, and the video is......well just watch the video. Final summation, Hell if I know.
