Rhetoric Analysis

State Radio presents a song about the imprisonment of Camilo Mejia, a soldier for the U.S. Army who was charged for desertion when he did not return for a second tour in Iraq. The song titled “Camilo” is powerful in its descriptions of Camilo Mejia’s experience. In the view of the conscientious objector, “Camilo” is a symbol for the protests against the Iraq War. Its analogies and imagery strip the U.S. Army from a stable image, leaving the audience sympathetic and influenced by Camilo Mejia’s actions.
The mood of “Camilo” is established instantaneously. Taking advantage of pathos, State Radio write that there was a “barrel to his head as he braced for the blow” which automatically proves the life threatening danger at hand. A man is preparing to leave this earth before he has even left his own bed. By opening the argument with such dramatic action, State Radio has consumed the attention of the audience while it has also rendered a victim and a villain. There are now two opposing sides where one is portrayed as being aggressive and ignorant where as the victim is shown as being unsuspecting and innocent. There’s no knowledge of why, no description of prior events which easily allows the audience to side with Camilo because they only know of a man who is facing his death.
“Camilo” is now developing into a defined battle between a soldier and his army. The argument of the conscientious objector is established where the lyrics claim, “What life have I to take your own, oh my country won’t you call out. Doorbells are ringing with boxes of bones” where State Radio uses a metaphor to show just what this war is causing. Using artistic appeals, they use the fact that people are continuing to die with no real purpose ; families continually suffer on all fronts where no-one, especially in this case, has the right to even take a life. The lyrics call for action. State Radio, who has creditable ethos, uses the story of Camilo Mejia to bring an end to the Iraq war.
After grabbing the audiences’ attention and calling for action, State Radio begins to look at and define the position of the Army, indirectly the U.S. Government. They set a direct and unyielding tone describing the motives and intentions of the military saying their words are “a bloody fallacy”, “a house of cards you painted white.” State Radio is setting substantial creditability by speaking honestly and using previous wars in comparison. Although it may be biased, they back up judgments and views with metaphors such as “red oil is spillin’ down on the street” and “is blood money just money to you?” Even though this currency is tainted with the pain and suffering of a nation, according to State Radio, the U.S. government will accepted it in any shape, with any stain.
There is a victim and there is a villain. The victim, along with Camilo, is anything and anyone in the way of the villain, or the U.S. Army. The rhetoric of State Radio’s “Camilo” presents a strong argument that has the ability to persuade anyone who is open-minded or is not against their music genre to recognize the abused powers of the army.

The pathos of the video is comparable if not exceeding that of the written lyrics and audio of “Camilo.” Showing the devastating images of the deceased along with the upset faces of the young and innocent, the music video embellishes State Radio’s argument against the U.S. in the Iraq War. It holds what the lyrics didn’t portray: repetitious explosions, helpless families and refugees along with statistics and logos, or hard evidence. Putting a face to Camilo also aids to the argument of State Radio.
The video is not all one sided. There are images and clips of terrorism in the U.S. which is in support of the invasion of Iraq. It’s as if State Radio shows the strengths of the Army’s argument but then destroys their position with the remaining five minutes of the video.

    “Almost Lover” by fine frenzy
“Almost Lover,” written by Fine Frenzy, a love story with a sad ending. This song brings lots of emotions and images to the readers who have ever been in a relationship like this. Most girls who have ever heard this song and had their hearts broken can relate. The song is about a girl that was in a relationship with a guy and she fell in love with him. But in the end she got her heart broken and writing this song is how she describes her pain. There are good examples of ethos, the writer emphasizes how she felt when they were together and how she is feeling now. Also talks about her strong feelings that she had when they were together and how she thought they were mutual. “And when you left you kissed my lips you told me you could never, never forget these images.” The girl expresses her feelings to how things were when they were together and happy, to how she feels now when they aren’t together and can’t understand how he could have these feelings for someone then walk right out of their life. It just goes to show that not everything guys say is true in a relationship; he manipulated her in to thinking they were in love and confused her with his emotions that he shared. When reading the lyrics it sets an image in your mind when she says, “I cannot go to the ocean, I cannot drive the streets at night, I cannot wake up in the morning, without you on my mind.” She write about how it is hard for her to move on because all she thinks about is him, she didn’t know where things went wrong in their relationship. How she describes the end of the song she makes it sound like this wasn’t the first time this has ever happened to her. “So long, my luckless romance, my back is turned on you, should have known you’d bring me heartache, almost lovers always do.” This song can relate to any girl that had ever had her heart broken, it isn’t easy getting over someone you once loved or the past experiences you shared together. For someone to write a song about their past relationship dealing with a bad ending, it always shows lot of emotions and hurt feelings.
In the video, it starts off with her playing the piano and how devastated she is as she is singing the song. The music video shows flashback to when she was in the relationship and how happy she was when they were together. The important part about most music videos in seeing how the singer expresses themselves by their gestures, posture, movements, or just the way they sound. Sound is key, which is how you determine what kind of song it will be from the beginning. When watching the video, it shows a lot more emotions to the song that people may or not see when the first hear the song. The video shows lots of ethos that the writer has for the song. As she sings the song she emphasizes notes by how high or low she sings. While watching and listening you can hear and see her pain that she is feeling. It also uses pathos by her tragic heartache and the ending of her relationship and how it impacted her. When relationships end they never really end well, so it is important to do things to get your mind off of it and think about other things. As for the writer of this song is what helped her by writing down her idea and getting it on paper. Sometimes emotions are best expressed vocally.
    Your fingertips across my skin
The palm trees swaying in the wind
    Images
    You sang me Spanish lullabies
The sweetest sadness in your eyes
    Clever trick
Well, I never want to see you unhappy
I thought you'd want the same for me
    [Chorus]
    Goodbye, my almost lover
    Goodbye, my hopeless dream
I'm trying not to think about you
Can't you just let me be?
    So long, my luckless romance
My back is turned on you
Should've known you'd bring me heartache
    Almost lovers always do
We walked along a crowded street
You took my hand and danced with me
    Images
And when you left, you kissed my lips
You told me you would never, never forget
    These images
    No
Well, I'd never want to see you unhappy
I thought you'd want the same for me
    [Chorus]
    Goodbye, my almost lover
    Goodbye, my hopeless dream
I'm trying not to think about you
Can't you just let me be?
    So long, my luckless romance
My back is turned on you
Should've known you'd bring me heartache
    Almost lovers always do
I cannot go to the ocean
I cannot drive the streets at night
I cannot wake up in the morning
    Without you on my mind
So you're gone and I'm haunted
And I bet you are just fine
    Did I make it that
Easy to walk right in and out
    Of my life?
    [Chorus]
    Goodbye, my almost lover
    Goodbye, my hopeless dream
I'm trying not to think about you
Can't you just let me be?
    So long, my luckless romance
My back is turned on you
Should have known you'd bring me heartache
    Almost lovers always do
